Congressional Reforms

Grant Legislators Guaranteed Floor Vote Bills

In Congress there are a handful of people who have the power to prevent bills from being voted on. This power creates an authoritarian system within Congress that goes against the principles of democracy. For this reason, I am in favor of granting each senator two bills and each representative one bill to receive a floor vote in their respective chamber. If passed in that chamber, these bills would also be guaranteed a floor vote in the other chamber. Guaranteed floor vote bills would still go through the necessary committees, but only recommended changes could be made. This would allow each member of Congress to receive a meaningful vote on the one or two pieces of legislation that matter most to them.

12-Year Term Limits for Congress

Not much to add other than current members of Congress would be exempt from these term limits.

Word Limits and/or Page Limits for Bills

When bills are passed without members of Congress having read them, let alone fully understood their implications, then our government is failing us. I find it hard to believe that any member of Congress could truly understand the implications of a bill that is hundreds or even thousands of pages long within a relatively short period of time, especially when they have to read and make decisions on hundreds of other bills.

By limiting the length of a bill, we reduce the chance for language to be inserted that has nothing to do with a bill's title, and ensure that citizens have a better chance at being able to read and understand what is in a bill. I am not sure what the exact word or page limit should be at this time, but one will eventually be proposed.
