Congressional Reforms

Guaranteed Floor Vote Bills for Legislators

There are a handful of people in Congress who have the power to prevent bills from being voted on. This creates an authoritarian system inside Congress which goes against the principles of democracy. For this reason, I am in favor of granting each senator two bills and each representative one bill that would be guaranteed to receive a floor vote in their respective chamber, and if passed, guaranteed to receive a floor vote in the opposing chamber. These bills would still make their way through necessary committees, but recommended changes could only be made. This would allow each member of Congress to advance and receive a meaningful vote on the one or two pieces of legislation that matter most to them.

14-Year Term Limits for Congress

Current members of Congress would be exempt from these term limits.

Word or Page Limit for Bills

When bills are passed without members of Congress having read them let alone understood their implications, our government is failing us. I find it hard to believe that in a relatively short period of time most members of Congress could truly understand the implications of multiple bills that are hundreds if not thousands of pages long. By enacting a word or page limit on bills, we make them easier to read and understand for both legislators and citizens and we help keep their language from straying too far away from their primary intent. My support for a specific word or page limit is likely around 2,000 - 5,000 words or 20 - 50 pages.
